Drama Games: The Imaginary Museum
January 6 2020
Summary
This game takes a player round an imaginary museum. It is played in pairs, one player is the museum guide who leads their guest around a room and convinces them that the objects they encounter are real exhibits.

Focus/ Skills
Imagination, Trust, Focus, Team Work, Communication, Improvisation.
Description
Divide the group into pairs. Players will both have the chance to be a tour guide and a museum visitor. Ask the pairs to choose who goes first at being the tour guide.
The tour guide has 5 minutes to explore the room and choose what type of museum they are a guide of, and what objects they are going to show to their visitor. For example, they may decide that it is a museum of dolls house furniture and everything they 'show' to their visitor is an item of furniture. Or that its a museum of Mars and all the items are objects a Martian would use. The limits are endless and can stretch as far as the imagination.
The skill in this game comes from being able to convince your guest that the museum is real. This will come from their ability to use their imagination, their dialogue and being able to improvise.
After the group discusses what has worked and what was challenging. Use this knowledge to swap over and try again.

Variations
Variation one
Try the exercise blindfolded for an extra challenge. This puts the emphasis on description and using senses other than sight.
This version of the game is great at demonstrating the power of words and descriptions. For example in theatre without a naturalistic set, the script can create the environment.
The blindfolded person will be nervous at first so the leader may want to keep in close contact with them (holding their arm to guide if the person is ok with this (remember some people don’t like to be touched so ask first).
Variation two
This game could also be played by people with limited mobility by bringing objects to the guest and vice versa. You could use a tray of objects as a museum display and play the game at a table or in chairs.
Variation three
Swap out the audible speech for sign language
